Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT): the future is now.

Connect remote devices and share data using simple and innovative platforms

Although there has been a lot of talk about the Internet of Things lately, there are only a few solutions that are really useful, cost-effective, and capable of effectively managing the integration of existing devices or the addition of new ones. As technology is fast evolving it is even more necessary to have flexible, scalable and easily integrated solution to tackle projects involving interconnected industrial devices.

Why the Internet of Things?

The Internet of Things has gone beyond the limited use of previous technology by providing extensive public network connections over the Internet and light, bi-directional and firewall-friendly protocol coverage.

The combination of these two factors create better opportunities in every sector, especially concerning  industrial applications  where data exchange between plant devices and machinery can yield great benefits, as defined by Industry 4.0.

Expanded connectivity for greater efficiency

The capacity to expand connectivity to interconnect with a variety of systems will promote greater efficiency to obtain:

  • Direct data collection from production machines all over: provides realtime information on where and how to intervene.
  • Productivity efficiency: based on production consumptions, raw material requests are placed in advance.
  • Preventive maintenance: based on the most frequent alerts,  maintenance service for specific interventions are prepared in advance.
  • Energy efficiency: based on real energy consumption data, adaptions are made accordingly to set functional parameters, downtimes and uptimes.
  • Collaborative production: machines become smarter and inter-communicate operational needs to remove inefficiencies and waste.

The Internet of Things architecture offers a great variety of management opportunities in the manufacturing industry, process control and infrastures to improve efficiency and productivity.  Essentially, IoT enables smart data communication between machines, devices and systems of diverse areas making it possible to interconnect environments that usually had to be dealt with separately beforehand: the factory level (Operations) and the management level (Information).

What does a good IIoT project need?

To start with you need to have a clear picture of what to communicate before going ahead with designing a IIoT project.  In order to do this certain aspects must be taken into consideration.

When dealing with plant systems that already exist, it is more than likely that the data to be exchanged is already contained in the different plant devices.  Therefore, you will need to know where to find this data before sending it to the Internet.  Once the data has been found, you will need to use gateways that are compatible with the existing devices’ protocols in question in order to get it sent to the Internet successfully.  Once recieved on the Internet, it can then be published by using the appropriate IoT protocols.

Conversely, if the data you need to exchange is non-existent, you will need to create it  by implementing  sensors or I/O devices that are capable of directly communicating within the world of IoT or collect the physical values and publish them within the IoT environment.

If it is a simple matter of exchanging data from one device to another, you will only need to use gateways that read and write data as required by the type of operation being handled.

On the other hand, if you need to collect, monitor, historically log and process data from various devices, you will need a IoT Platform to manage the incoming data with specific tools to record it on DB or in the Cloud.  The data can then be displayed directly on dashboards and screens in realtime or manipulated with analytical tools and shown on Reports or Charts.
So, if you are planning to use  Industrial IoT projects, the Progea technology is just what you need.  Our solution offerings are at the forefront of innovation and based on technologies specifically developed for the Internet of Things.
